In 60 words
On 27 May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to pedestrians, and about 200,000 people walked across. Its main span of about 1,280 m made it the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. Painted 'International Orange', it is one of the most photographed bridges on Earth.
