24 December 1968: The Earthrise photograph is taken

On 24 December 1968, Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders photographed the Earth rising over the Moon's horizon. The image, known as 'Earthrise', showed our planet as a small, colourful world in the darkness of space, and it inspired many people to care for the environment.
