Saudi Arabia launches Vision 2030

In 60 words

On 25 April 2016, Saudi Arabia announced Vision 2030, a national plan led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to diversify the economy beyond oil. It aims for a vibrant society, a thriving economy and an ambitious nation. Since then, the Kingdom has opened to tourism, expanded entertainment and sport, and launched giga-projects.

Vision 2030 was approved by the Council of Ministers, under King Salman, and announced on 25 April 2016. It was led by Mohammed bin Salman, then Deputy Crown Prince and now Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The plan rests on three pillars. A vibrant society, with strong roots, culture, entertainment and healthy lives. A thriving economy, with more private-sector jobs, investment and new industries. And an ambitious nation, with effective and transparent government.

Change followed quickly. The Public Investment Fund grew into one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds. Cinemas reopened and women began driving in 2018, and tourist visas were introduced in 2019.

Giga-projects such as NEOM, the Red Sea destinations, Qiddiya and Diriyah were launched. Women's participation in the workforce rose sharply.

The Kingdom has also won the right to host major global events, including the World Expo in 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
